Mount Pleasant hunt play-off spot in JPL

Former champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy could join leaders Montego Bay United as early qualifiers for the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) play-offs when they host Harbour View Football Club in a third-round game at Drax Hall today at 7:00 pm.

Mount Pleasant are second on 60 points, five behind Montego Bay United, and a win would secure their place in the top six.

Montego Bay United are away to Arnett Gardens Football Club, while third-placed Racing United Football Club visit Dunbeholden Football Club. Portmore United Football Club, who are fourth, host defending champions Cavalier Football Club, while fifth-placed Waterhouse Football Club entertain Tivoli Gardens Football Club.

At the foot of the table, Spanish Town Police Football Club and Molynes United Football Club will meet in a relegation-zone derby, while 12th-placed Treasure Beach Football Club host Phoenix Chapelton Maroons Football Club.

At Drax Hall, Mount Pleasant will be seeking to rebound after a surprise 1-0 loss to Tivoli Gardens on Sunday. They face a Harbour View team that has climbed out of the bottom two but is still not safe from relegation.

Mount Pleasant have won just once in their last five outings but beat Harbour View 4-1 in their most recent meeting, after losing 1-0 in their first-round encounter.

Harbour View, meanwhile, have lost just once in their last five games and have edged out of the relegation zone, though only six points separate the bottom four teams.

Montego Bay United still have unfinished business, with Head Coach Xavier Gilbert saying they are targeting a top-two finish and an automatic semi-final spot. They will be aiming to get the better of Arnett Gardens today.

Top scorer Dwight Merrick was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 6-0 win over Spanish Town Police, suggesting he may have been rested for what is expected to be a more competitive contest.

Time is running out for Arnett Gardens, who are five points off a play-off spot. They are coming off a loss to Dunbeholden and have won just once in their last five games.

Racing United are well placed to qualify for the play-offs in only their second season, but are without a win in their last five matches. They lead Portmore United on goal difference and face a Dunbeholden team also pushing for a top-six finish.

Dunbeholden are yet to beat Racing United, with both meetings this season ending in draws.

Portmore United, who have beaten Cavalier twice this season, will be aiming for another three points against a team that has alternated between wins and losses in their last four matches.

Waterhouse have not beaten Tivoli Gardens in their last four meetings but will start favourites against a team fighting to keep their season alive.

Chapelton Maroons have slipped to ninth after picking up just two points from their last three games, following wins over Montego Bay United and Tivoli Gardens. They are now five points adrift of the play-off spots.

Treasure Beach have won once in their last eight games and, after back-to-back losses, sit three points above the relegation zone.
