Another Haitian who entered the island illegally ordered deported
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A journey that began along Jamaica’s northern coastline ended inside a Montego Bay courtroom last Wednesday, where the decision of a Haitian to turn himself in to the authorities brought an immigration matter to a swift conclusion.
Angelo Exerre appeared in the St James Parish Court before Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton and pleaded guilty to illegal entry.
Court records show that on March 10 Exerre arrived in Jamaica on a boat which docked in Portland. Three Jamaicans were reportedly in the boat.
After making his way into the country he spent about three weeks working in Portland before travelling to Montego Bay by taxi.
Exerre later went to the Montego Bay Police Station and turned himself in. There, he reportedly informed authorities that he had entered Jamaica illegally.
He also disclosed that his mother had died on March 29 and stated that he wished to be deported to Haiti in order to care for his child.
Following his guilty plea the court imposed a fine of $1,000 or two days’ imprisonment in default. A deportation order was also issued.
