Jamaican Romae Gordon recognised among age-defying models on fashion’s top runways
The New York Times has spotlighted a Jamaican leading one of fashion’s most significant cultural shifts, as Romae Gordon takes center stage among the new faces redefining luxury fashion.
In a landmark cover story titled “Ageless Beauty: A Longer Runway to Be in Fashion”, chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman highlights Gordon’s remarkable journey, placing her at the heart of a generation-defining movement.
The feature, which graced the front page of the New York Times Sunday Styles section, celebrates the rise of older women as powerful forces in the fashion world.
Gordon is named among some of the most iconic names in the industry, including Christy Turlington and Paulina Porskova, as one of the women defining what that looks like.
From the houses of Chanel, Proenza Schouler and Givenchy to the major cosmetic companies now signing women of a certain age as the faces of their brands, the industry is signalling a structural shift in who fashion is for and who gets to define it. As Friedman’s piece makes clear, this is not a trend, women of a certain again can enjoy graceful longevity in the space.
According to a press release from the Sheldon Alexander Group, Gordon’s return to the runway is nothing short of extraordinary. After spending decades behind the scenes, scouting, developing and launching the careers of Caribbean models like Jeneil Williams, Jaunel McKenzie, Nadine Willis, and Oraine Barrett, Gordon has now made a remarkable comeback to the runway.
Her journey back to international fashion began with Versace in Milan, marking her first appearance on a major runway in over 30 years. From there, she graced Chanel Haute Couture in Paris, followed by a stunning appearance at Proenza Schouler’s FW26 collection in New York, and a walk for Diotima as well. The Jamaican woman who was pivotal in building an industry from the inside out is now one of modeling’s most compelling stories for a longer runway.
In her extensive exposé for the New York Times, Friedman draws on Gordon’s experience and unique perspective.
“There’s a practical reality agencies have to face: that older women have the purchasing power to buy what is being presented and they have a desire to see themselves and their lived experiences in these spaces,” Gordon is quoted as saying in the story.
One of the pillars for Gordon’s team, Deeg, the head of the Sheldon Alexander Group said, “Gordon epitomises the essence of the modern woman, a mom, a versatile and exceptional multi-hyphate.”
The group said she continues to carve a new path for women and maintain Jamaica’s place among the best in global fashion.
