Sav to White House road cleared after early morning protest
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — A section of the Savanna-la-Mar to White House route in Westmoreland, which was blocked by protestors earlier today, is now cleared.
The roadway was blocked before 7:00 am and was cleared about three hours later.
The protestors, including placard- bearing taxi operators, were protesting poor road conditions.
Mitchell Scott, a taxi operator who plies the Savanna-la-Mar to White House route, told Observer Online that while the roadway has been in a terrible condition for some time now, it became worse following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October.
“The road is definitely bad going up to White House, especially in the city (Savanna-la-Mar) here. I was born and raised here, and this is the worst I have ever seen the road. And, I am a 66-year-old,” stated Scott.
Scott further explained that the condition of the road has resulted in frequent damage to his motor vehicle.
He said it is costing a tidy sum to repair his vehicle monthly.
“Struts alone cost over $40,000. Front-end parts, I can hardly name them. They all vary, and these ride [motor vehicle] here; they were not built for this type of rough roads,” said Scott, who drives a Toyota Voxy.
Similar sentiments were shared by Scott’s colleague Collin Kaye, who operates on the same route.
