Faith, Friendship, and Forever

Faith, Friendship, and Forever

Years before they would find themselves at the altar, registered nurse Jonna Leair and musician Joel Graham were just two 12- and 13-year-olds at summer camp — a connection that matured from childhood admiration into lifelong devotion.

How They Met

The opening notes of their love story were struck at a National Missionary Youth Ministries summer camp in 2010, where Jonna first met Joel.

“There was a banquet one evening, and tradition involved picking a partner…he picked my name, so we ended up attending together. My immediate impression was of a lively and outgoing individual — everyone seemed to love him! But that wasn’t really my style back then, so I wasn’t particularly drawn to him,” recalled Jonna to Tuesday Style Vows (TSV).

What began as a church camp memory that seemed destined to fade, restricted by the miles between Jonna’s Kingston home and Joel’s life in St Elizabeth, changed two years later.

“It wasn’t until he later moved to Kingston with his family and began attending the same church as I did that things started to change,” Jonna said. “I became close with his sister, and as we spent more time together, he naturally became part of that circle. Over time, we both began to develop feelings for each other.”

The Proposal

That emotional spark proved more than fleeting. By 2017, their relationship had matured into a partnership firmly geared towards a shared future.

“In truth, there wasn’t a single defining moment that made me realise he was the one. Rather, it was a collection of meaningful experiences over time that affirmed it for me, alongside God’s guidance throughout our journey,” Jonna expressed.

Even as they moved into different chapters after graduating, their love only grew stronger, culminating in June 2025 when Joel proposed to Jonna.

“He planned a really special and intimate proposal — a private picnic that was also captured on video. Every detail meant so much to me, from my favourite colours and tones to the food, the white roses, and even my favourite white wine. It just felt so personal and thoughtful,” Jonna recalled. “In that moment, so calm and full of love, he asked me to spend forever with him, and of course, I said yes! And right after, our immediate family showed up and celebrated with us, which made it even more special. It honestly felt like everything came together perfectly. It was full of love, joy, peace, and God’s favour over our relationship and what’s ahead.”

The Wedding

On New Year’s Eve 2025, Joel and Jonna exchanged vows, ensuring that their first moments of 2026 would be as a married couple. They celebrated their union at Boone Hall Oasis in St Andrew, where the tranquil atmosphere was heightened by the décor of Events Architect, while the organisation was overseen by the team at Memories By Mwezi.

Escorted by her father, John Leair, Jonna walked up the aisle in a strapless satin ball gown from Azazie Bridal. While John appeared the very picture of composure as he led his daughter towards the awaiting groom, the drive to the venue had been a far more spirited affair.

“After all the excitement of getting ready, I just wanted a quiet moment to take everything in, but my dad talked the entire drive! It was so funny, and I could tell it was just his way of dealing with his nerves,” Jonna said.

Any lingering nerves evaporated as father and daughter made their way to the altar, to the strains of Future

Forever by Mike Todd featuring Chandler Moore. After John presented Jonna to Joel, the couple pledged their lives to one another in a moving ceremony officiated by Pastor Bruce Polson.

The Reception

The festivities continued at the reception, featuring a sumptuous banquet curated by the Boone Hall Oasis team. After being honoured by a collection of memorable toasts from their loved ones, Joel and Jonna cut their two-tiered wedding cake from Asha Bakery & Catering Ja. The newly-weds then opened the dance floor to
Genesis by Chronixx, bringing to a close a day of celebration and tranquillity that the couple will treasure for a lifetime.

Joel and Jonna later honeymooned at Couples Tower Isle, St Mary.
