Molynes seek third-straight in JPL relegation battle

MOLYNES United will continue their fight against relegation from the Jamaica Premier League when they take on struggling Racing United in their third-round game at Ferdie Neita Park, starting at 3:30 pm.

Molynes, who are in 11th place on 33 points, just above the relegation zone, are in a four-team battle to avoid the drop and will be chasing a third-straight win for the first time this season.

Also today, leaders Montego Bay United (MBU) will be hoping to open up a nine-point lead at the top of the table when they host Tivoli Gardens at Jarrett Park.

Five more games are set for Thursday as teams continue to battle for points at both ends of the table with the regular season nearing its end.

Molynes have climbed out of the basement with back-to-back wins, beating Spanish Town Police 9-0 and Arnett Gardens 3-0, and will face a Racing United team that has not won since mid-March. In that seven-game stretch, they have scored just three goals.

Racing slipped from third to fifth place after a 4-1 loss away to MBU on Sunday, but Head Coach Anthony Patrick said he is not worried about qualifying for the top six.

They are on 56 points, 10 more than seventh-placed Arnett Gardens, with four games still to play, thanks largely to a strong start to the season when they lost just once in their first 24 matches.

Racing have beaten Molynes twice this season but could start as underdogs, with the Kingston team enjoying their best run of form. Nicholas Nelson has been key, scoring three goals in the last two games.

MBU are four points away from securing an automatic semi-final place, and another win over Tivoli Gardens would move them closer to a top-two finish.

Tivoli Gardens remain in a tricky position. They are not safe from relegation and their chances of reaching the top-six play-offs are slim, but they have won three of their last five games and have consistently tested MBU.

MBU have won both meetings between the teams this season and will be confident playing at home, especially after their big win over Racing United on Sunday.
