Schoolgirl attacked during commute home, transport minister responds
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A schoolgirl was ambushed and beaten by students from Marcus Garvey Technical High School (Top Campus) on Wednesday, prompting outrage after video of the attack surfaced online.
The incident, first brought to public attention through a post on X by user KINGMIXUP, described how the victim, who was allegedly not involved in the initial dispute, was targeted while travelling in a bus home from school. According to the user, and as seen in the video, multiple students surrounded her and were seen hitting her repeatedly. Based on the recount given by the user the bus driver reportedly did not intervene.
The user shared that the victim reportedly returned home visibly injured, suffering a swollen face, a bruised lip, and torn clothing.
According to KINGMIXUP the full video has not been released to protect the student’s identity.
The incident has raised serious concerns about student safety on the government-supported transport system introduced under Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ Administration, which was intended to provide a secure means of travel for students.
In the post by KINGMIXUP it was revealed that family members have confirmed that the student is seeking medical attention and that a formal report is being filed. They stress that the attack should not be dismissed as “school drama” but recognised as a serious case of group assault and battery.
In response, Jamaica’s Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport issued a statement confirming that the incident occurred in Ocho Rios at approximately 3:45 pm. The minister noted that the driver alerted the police, who subsequently intercepted the bus.
Authorities are now reviewing statements and footage, including CCTV recordings, as part of an ongoing investigation, with materials to be shared with the relevant schools.
