Ras Emmanuel promotes latest single ‘Drinky Drinky’ in UK
In March, Ras Emmanuel travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) for a series of shows to promote Drinky Drinky, his latest song, which calls on people to refrain from heavy alcohol consumption. It was more than he bargained for.
Along with MC Nuffy, Ras Emmanuel performed in reggae-friendly areas of London, Birmingham and Luton as well as surrounding areas.
“It was humorous, adventurous. I get to explore things mi neva experience before,” he told Observer Online.
In addition to the shows, the New Jersey-based artiste appeared on AG Live, one of the most popular streaming programmes in the UK. It is hosted by Ashley “DJ AG” Gordon, who is of Jamaican heritage.
Throughout his UK trek, Ras Emmanuel promoted Drinky Drinky which was released early this year. Recorded on the hot WYFL riddim, it is a departure from the roots rockers he has recorded, including Next Door to Good and Break up Your Back.
“It telling di man dem sey fi tek time wid di liquor. Nuff a di man dem cyaan find dem car door (when they drink),” he said.
London, Birmingham and Luton are areas with large Jamaican and West Indian populations. Jamaicans settled in those locations during the 1950s and 1960s, establishing strong music links through sound systems and record shops.
Ras Emmanuel is from Central Village, a rugged community located on the outskirts of Spanish Town. He cut his musical teeth there on sound systems, and listening to artistes like Papa San and Lieutenant Stitchie, who were mainstays of the Spanish Town music scene.
