Frazsiers Whip and Arnett Gardens can secure JWPL semis
DEFENDING champions Frazsiers Whip and Arnett Gardens need only a point each to secure semi-final places in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League as action continues in today’s return-round fixtures.
Frazsiers Whip, who lead Zone B with a perfect 21 points from seven straight wins, can confirm their semi-final spot with at least a draw against Springers United at Irwin High in St James.
Arnett Gardens, the Zone A leaders with 19 points, can also book an early semi-final place with a draw against WiFi United at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Several other teams will be aiming to improve their chances, with six sides still in contention for the remaining semi-final spots.
Frazsiers Whip, who beat Springers United 4-0 in their first meeting, have scored 31 of their 37 goals over their last four matches, conceding just once during that run. Springers United, meanwhile, started strongly with two wins but have lost their last four games, conceding 15 goals and scoring three.
The attacking trio of Christine Salmon, Shanel Spence and Nevillegail Able, who have combined for 29 goals, are expected to pose a major challenge.
Arnett Gardens defeated WiFi United 4-1 away in their first-round meeting and will again have home advantage. WiFi United have failed to score in their last two matches. Shikira Douglas leads Arnett Gardens with 10 goals and will look to add to her tally.
Los Perfectos and Federal United, who meet at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, are separated by three points and remain in contention for a semi-final spot. Federal United, third on 12 points, will be seeking revenge after a 1-0 first-round defeat but may need a large winning margin to overturn the goal difference against the Manchester-based leaders.
A win would put Los Perfectos within touching distance of the semi-finals, with Venicia Reid leading the attack on 11 goals. Federal United will look to Yasheka Lewis and Shaquillea Williams, who have both scored twice, to inspire an upset.
Cavalier could secure the second semi-final spot in Zone A with a win over Proven Girls but will also need other results to go their way for early qualification. The first meeting between the teams ended 0-0.
Real Mona will also be aiming to stay in the semi-final race when they face UWI Women’s FC. Real Mona won the first meeting 5-0.
