Supernatural Power looms large in World Vet Day Trophy
CLASS should tell when the $1.25-million World Vet Day Trophy goes to post as the feature on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park today.
Twelve runners are declared for the one-mile (1,600m) contest but all eyes will be on Supernatural Power (USA), the Philip Feanny-conditioned grey filly who looks thrown in at the weights after two strong runs against the best in the land.
The four-year-old daughter of Cross Traffic has banked two second-place finishes this season, and both came in elite company. Last time out, on April 6, she chased home Horse of the Year and stablemate Rideallday in the Ian Levy Cup over eight and a half furlongs (1,700m), beaten just two and three-quarter lengths in a race run in record time as both track and stakes records fell that day.
Prior to that, she was also second to Funcaandun at seven furlongs (1,400m) on March 14.
Today she takes a significant drop in grade. She meets no Rideallday, no Graded One runners, and no horse with her recent speed figures. From gate one, with her tactical speed and proven class, she should be able to dictate or sit handy before putting this field away. On all known form she wins and wins well.
The Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward is positioned as the 10th and final event with a post time of 5:40 pm, but the first race is at 11:45 am.
The fight for the minors looks more open. Mark My Identity brings the most credible alternative form. The Bern Identity colt was a clear second, beaten at four and a half lengths by the promising
Don Kwesi over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on April 11. He’s genuine, stays the trip, and has been holding his form. If Supernatural Power falters he’s the one to capitallise. More than likely, though, he’s running for second money.
Magnificent Force (USA) is the wild card for trifecta players. The Cloud Computing mare caught the eye last time when she closed strongly to finish fourth over six and a half furlongs (1,300m). That was a sharp sprint, and this mile should be right up her street. She’s bred to stay, and if the pace collapses she’ll be flying late. She won’t beat the favourite but she can crash the exacta.
Is That A Fact (USA) comes in with a quiet buzz. The Palace Malice six-year-old has been working well in the mornings, and trainer Jason daCosta rarely sends one to post unfit. He’s been outclassed in stakes company before but in this softer spot he could outrun his odds for a share.
Of the rest,Sensational Soul should enjoy the galloping track and is bred for the trip, but he needs a career-best to trouble the principals. Sheer Delight and Cookie Day N Night are place hopes at best. Unspun has lost his way, while Captain Sparrow, California Gold, Wicked Cassie (USA), and Inspire Force (USA) look overmatched.
