Oshane Mais fuses traditional, modern gospel sounds on How I Got Over Medley
Gospel recording artiste and ordained minister Oshane Mais has collaborated with his brother Danekeyzie on his latest effort How I Got Over Medley.
This is the second time that the brothers have fused their musical talents into a body of work.
How I Got Over Medley was released on April 24.
“The How I Got Over Medley was born out of a desire to reimagine the classic church of God songs we grew up singing in church, infusing them with modern sounds and elements while preserving their original message and spirit. This medley was thoughtfully crafted to connect both generations: For the older audience it brings back the familiarity of cherished songs, and for the younger it offers a fresh, contemporary arrangement of the music they heard growing up. At its core, the project is about bridging the gap between tradition and today,” Mais told the Jamaica Observer on Friday.
How I Got Over Medley was recorded at the Allmighty Studios and it was produced by Danekeyzie.
“Working with my brother on this track it was truly a great experience. My brother and I have both been making strides in the gospel industry individually, but this marks our second collaboration. My mom is especially excited about it, which makes the moment even more meaningful. So, yes, this feels like the beginning of something much bigger to come for us,” said Mais.
Three years ago, Mais collaborated with singer Trish on the song titled Take a Moment, which was produced by Danekeyzie.
Mais is upbeat about the reception to How I Got Over Medley.
“The feedback has been incredible! One person said it felt like a Friday morning revival, while others couldn’t stop saying, “I love it, love it, love it!” Another joked that my patois sounded a bit Upper St Andrew-ish, which made me laugh. I was intentional about adding a Jamaican touch to the track and thought, what better way to do that than incorporating the Jamaican creole here and there into the ad libs? Overall, I’m truly grateful for the support and the positive response the track has received,” he shared.
Mais is presently working on a worship album, which he says will serve as his début full-length project.
Nominated for multiple Sterling Gospel Music Awards, he has been singing professionally since high school.
“My professional journey began around 2011 in high school and later I became a member of two singing groups. It wasn’t until 2018 that I stepped into solo ministry. The journey has been amazing, with its ups and downs along the way, but I would rather face life with Jesus by my side. There are times when even the blessings we receive can feel like a burden, but I’ve learned in this season that we must not only pray for the blessings but also pray for the ability to be good stewards of what God has given us; learning how to manage and handle those blessings well. The Lord has been kind!”
Born into a musical family, he and his four brothers developed a passion for music.
In 2018, he launched Oshane Mais Ministries, with the motto, Created to Worship. Since the launch of his ministry the singer/songwriter has released a total of 11 tracks, which include the début single Forever, the
Overcome EP with the song Hymns and Spiritual Songs Medley; the hit single Rock Medley, which features Petra Kaye; a collaborative track Love (Covered Me) with Kevin Downswell; and most recently a reggae track titled Better Day.
