Papine, Knox claim ISSA all-island volleyball titles
Knox College girls and Papine High boys were crowned ISSA all-island volleyball champions, as the competition concluded at G C Foster College in St Catherine, on Wednesday.
Knox, who have dominated schoolgirls’ volleyball since 2023, won their fourth-consecutive all-island crown, while Papine were winning their first-ever title.
In the girls’ final, Knox overpowered urban champions Immaculate Conception High 3-0.
Both teams were hot at the start, trading points and were locked at 14-14 before the defending champions surged mostly through the power and guile of their irrepressible captain and MVP Treviann Taylor. The Knox captain was the centre of everything red and black, as Knox took the first set 25-22.
As the game progressed, so did the defending champions. Immaculate made minor but costly mistakes, especially in defence, and the experienced Knox team gleefully capitalised, going on to take the second set 25- 22.
Immaculate did not lose their appetite for the fight in the third set, but the relentless Knox outfit duly knocked them down 25-18.
The boys’ championship match between defending champions Oracabessa High and Papine High was a good demonstration of power service and hitting.
Papine, seeking their maiden hold on the all-island title, were willing to live and die playing above the net, while Oracabessa were slightly more subdued in their approach.
Papine took the first set 25-20 on the back of great play from MVP Ithran Softley, their best player.
The boys from St Andrew approached the second set similar to the first, and powered to a 25- 15 margin.
Oracabessa showed their best form in the third set, but it was too little too late, as they went down 22-25 as Papine High sealed the historic victory.
