Title fight meets top-four war

Title fight meets top-four war

...Arsenal, Man United host Fulham, Liverpool in blockbuster weekend

Arsenal welcomes Fulham to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday for a crucial match that could have significant implication for the title race, while another six-pointer in the race for Europe beckons when Manchester United hosts Liverpool in the biggest derby in English football.

Event # 1 – EPL – Arsenal vs Fulham – 11:30 AM

Arsenal continues their pursuit of a first Premier League title in over 20 years when they host another London side, Fulahm, in an eagerly anticipated encounter. Indeed, Arsenal no longer have that vice-grip like hold on the title after they were beaten 2-1 away by Manchester City, but they rebounded in their last league game by beating Newcastle 1-0, to go three points atop the standing albeit, having played a game more than Manchester City. Now, they can go six points clear of Manchester City who don’t play until Monday, in a difficult away fixture at Everton. The Gunners enter this crucial match off the back of a credible 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid in a midweek Champions League first-leg semi-final clash.

Unlike their hosts Arsenal, Fulham had an entire week to prepare for this huge game as they still harbour thoughts of playing European football next season, and they head into this clash off the back of an important one-nil win over another European hopeful, Aston Villa, in their last league outing. The win against Aston Villa means Fulham is only two points behind Brighton, who are sixth in the table. However, arriving and leaving the Emirates with a win will prove extremely difficult for Fulham as they possess the fourth worst away record in the Premier League, having won just one of their last eight away matches.

Key Stats

• Arsenal — Nine of Arsenal’s last 10 home matches have all ended with under 2.5 goals.

• Fulham — Nine of Fulham’s last 11 away games have ended with under 3.5 goals.

• Both sides — Arsenal is unbeaten against Fulham at home in their last 18 overall matches, but Fulham arrives at the Emirates having lost just one of their last five away matches.

The betting tip: Arsenal win.

Event # EPL – Manchester United vs Liverpool – 9:30 AM

The biggest derby in English football takes centre stage on Sunday, May 3, when Manchester United and Liverpool collide at the Theatre of Dreams. With that said, it is another six-pointer in the race for the top three positions, with Man. United having the opportunity to go six points clear of Liverpool, if they can defeat their eternal rivals on home soil. Rivalry and derby aside, Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Brentford in their last outing, clinched a spot in the top four, with just four matches remaining in the season. The Red Devils have regained some form after a mini wobble, with back-to-back wins seeing them all but securing their place in next season’s Champions League. Furthermore, United have lost just two league matches since Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager back in January, and with United knowing a win would guarantee them European football next season, they will need no extra motivation.

Liverpool arrives at Old Trafford in excellent form, having embarked on a three-match winning run, as they aim to join their bitter rivals in the Champions League next season. With that said, Liverpool travels to Old Trafford in good mood as it has been a happy hunting ground for them in recent times, too. The Reds have only lost once in the Premier League there since 2018, however, the margin for error is gone, with Liverpool aware that victories in their remaining matches is the order of the day, if they are to play in Europe next season, but their results against elite teams recently have been alarmingly poor. Heavy thrashing against the likes of Manchester City and PSG exposed a side that is mentally fragile and tactically uncertain.

Key Stats

• Man United have won back-to-back games in the Premier League ahead of this game and have scored at least one goal in 22 consecutive matches.

• Liverpool have won three matches on the trot heading into this clash and have lost just once at Old Trafford since 2018.

• Both sides — Since April 2024, Liverpool have lost just once against Manchester United in five Premier League encounters, winning two and drawing two.

The betting tip: Draw.
