T-Drive ‘flies’ to #2 spot on Island Gold Radio chart
Jamaican recording artiste T-Drive is celebrating a major milestone in his musical journey after his single Fly Away climbed to the number two spot on the Island Gold Radio Top 10 Reggae Chart in West Palm Beach for the week of May 1.
Born Trevor Hewitt, the artiste says the achievement represents years of hard work, dedication, and belief in his craft.
“I felt honoured and privileged to be featured alongside many established artistes on the Captain Kirk Island Gold reggae chart,” T-Drive shared. “Reaching number two was a major achievement for me and a strong indication that my music is being well received internationally.”
The stage name “T-Drive” was born during a studio session with renowned selector GT Taylor. According to the singer, the name change came after his former moniker, G-nius, was often confused with producer and artiste Di Genius.
“Since my real name is Trevor, the ‘T’ represents that, and ‘Drive’ represents the passion, determination, and motivation I have for music and my career,” he explained.
Originally from Trelawny and now residing in Manchester, T-Drive credits his upbringing and early involvement in school concerts and local sound systems for shaping his musical foundation.
“These experiences helped develop my confidence, stage presence, and passion for music from an early age,” he said.
Released on November 28, 2025, Fly Away was inspired by love and the search for a genuine connection.
“The song expresses the desire to be with the woman of my dreams and to share a deep, genuine connection where love feels natural and real,” T-Drive explained. “The message I want listeners to take from it is that true love is worth searching for, and when you find the right person, it should feel like peace, comfort, and freedom — like flying away together,” he added.
The track was produced by Junavill Records, with T-Drive describing the recording process as “smooth and filled with positive energy.”
The overseas success of the song has further reinforced his belief in the universal appeal of reggae music and his artistry.
“I have always felt support from overseas listeners, so I knew the music would connect globally. However, the level of response I am currently receiving continues to motivate me to remain consistent and true to myself and to never give up,” the artiste continued.
For the rising entertainer, the international recognition marks an important chapter in his career and fuels his determination to continue elevating his music on the world stage.
“It serves as strong motivation for me to continue working hard, improving my craft, and consistently releasing good music in Jamaica and around the world,” he added.
T-Drive also offered words of encouragement to young Jamaican artistes hoping to break into international markets.
“My advice is to stay true to your sound and produce good quality music. Authenticity is what will make you stand out. Focus on continuous growth, learn the business side of the industry, and ensure that every decision you make contributes positively to your journey,” he said.
