‘We couldn’t wait to fix things’
Portmore point to different approach after booking spot in semis
Head coach of many-time champions Portmore United Rudolph Austin said his team was determined not to make the same mistake twice as they beat Racing United 2-0 at the National Stadium on Wednesday, winning 5-3 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals of the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League.
Goals by Tarick Ximinies in the 46th minute and substitute Rashaun Small in the 83rd, propelled Portmore United to their first win over Racing United this season in five attempts.
On Sunday, Portmore established a three-goal advantage but were pegged back by Racing United in a disappointing 3-3 draw.
“It’s just the mindset. I think the players went into the game with a different mindset. Not like they went there last week, but I think there wasn’t any complacency tonight,” said Austin.
“I was happy with the way we controlled the game, the way we kept the ball. We could have made the score more, but we were happy with the 2-0 win,” Austin added.
Midfield general and captain Ramone Howell said they were eager to set things right after blowing a huge lead in the first leg.
“We were leading 3-0 and they came back 3-3. As a team, we couldn’t wait for this one to turn things around,” said Howell.
“In the first game, we started well. We went up early and controlled most of the game but in the latter part of the game, I wasn’t playing anything but this time I wanted to help my teammates,” Howell explained.
Meanwhile, Racing United’s Head Coach Anthony Patrick said it was a bittersweet season for him, the players, the club and the supporters.
“Since 2017, everyone has rallied around the team, coming from the lowest league in the parish of St Catherine and now in our second season in the Premier League we have seen our growth,” said Patrick.
Last season in our first year, we barely missed out on the play-offs, and this season we decided to give it our honest, God-given effort and see how far we can go and it took us to the top six this year and we are grateful and joyous,” said Patrick.
“I must applaud the players, who stuck with us from 2017 and the supporting staff. It was a long journey and we stuck it out with the help of the Lord,” he added.
“We gave it a great run, played a very good, disciplined game in the first half, but it took a brilliant goal to break us down. I must thank the players and hope they hold their heads high,” said Patrick.
Although he is not sure if he will be around at the club next season, Patrick is hoping and wishing the club well in the future.
Portmore United will now meet Mount Pleasant FA on Sunday, while Cavalier take on Montego Bay United in the semi-finals of the Jamaica Premier League, with both matches also taking place at the National Stadium.
