FOR almost three decades Sharon Rushie has helped shape a more inclusive experience for families visiting Beaches Negril.

Rushie, kids camp manager at the resort, has built a reputation for her unwavering commitment to children and families. Over the years, her role has evolved into more than managing activities — she has become a steady and trusted presence for parents, particularly those travelling with children on the autism spectrum.

Her passion for autism awareness has grown alongside Beaches Resorts’ wider commitment to inclusion. The brand became the first resort company in the world to achieve Autism Certification through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), and as of 2026 more than 80 per cent of Beaches Negril team members are certified.

Rushie plays a key role during recertification visits, guiding IBCCES representatives through the resort and demonstrating how its programmes and facilities support neurodivergent guests.

Hotel Manager Danielle Daley emphasised the philosophy behind the approach.

“When you meet one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism, our goal is to adapt to each individual and ensure every guest can experience the Caribbean in a way that feels comfortable and inclusive,” said Daley.

For families, that approach can make a significant difference.

Rushie recalled working with a child whose previous vacations had been cut short due to difficulty adjusting to new environments. Through consistent routines, preparation and patient support, the experience gradually shifted.

“We would let him know ahead of time what to expect, so he could prepare and by the end of the stay, he had settled into the routine and was enjoying himself which left his mother in tears as she was delighted to see him enjoying the moment,” she said.

Experiences like these have reinforced Rushie’s belief in the importance of understanding and adaptability. She noted that her work has also influenced how she interacts with families beyond the resort, encouraging greater awareness and empathy within her own community.

As Beaches Negril continues to strengthen its position as a leader in inclusive hospitality, Rushie’s contribution remains central. Her work reflects a simple but powerful idea that, with the right support, every family can create meaningful and lasting memories.
