Champions Frazsiers Whip one step closer to greatness
Three-time defending Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) champions Frazsiers Whip enter Saturday’s semi-finals on the chase for another title. However, trophies aside, the St Catherine-based team is assured in the knowledge that having gone through the season unbeaten and a sitting two steps away from another trophy-winning campaign, they are not chasing success, but also greatness.
Frazsiers Whip enter the semi-finals after helping themselves to a maximum 30 points, a league-topping 62 goals scored and a four conceded, to again establish themselves as the standard bearers of local women’s club football.
Standing in their way and an unprecedented fourth-straight JWPL title is the irreverent Real Mona FC — a young and fearless crop of girls, eager to take another big scalp, after beating Cavalier to a place in the semi-finals.
At the heart of everything Frazsiers Whip have built is something that no football tactic can teach — a bond.
“The bond the girls have and the environment we create for them as a club,” that’s how Head Coach Courtney Dowdie explained the team’s three consecutive championship triumphs.
It’s a simple response, but the results speak volumes.
In a competition where talent isn’t scarce, Frazsiers Whip have consistently found a way to function as a cohesive, relentless unit season after season.
That environment extends beyond winning.
For Dowdie, the true measure of success is what his players carry with them after the final whistle of their careers.
“For them to get scholarships and contracts to play overseas,” he said, outlining his bigger vision for the squad.
Testament to that is the fact that eight players from last season’s all-conquering team have moved on to overseas scholarships while two are now playing professional football overseas.
That loss of talent has not slowed the juggernaut but with Real Mona capturing the imagination of a Jamaican public eager to see a dynasty being tested, Dowie, is remaining measured in his assessment ahead of Saturday’s 6:00pm headliner at the JFF/Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence at UWI.
Arnett Gardens and Los Perfectos will meet in the opener at 3:00pm. The second leg semifinals are set for the same venue next week with the final set for Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on May 30.
“I just think it will be a good game between two good teams,” Dowdie said.
Dowie’s kind of quiet confidence comes from a coach who has stood on this stage before and got results.
As for the weight of defending another title, Dowdie remains calm.
“There is no pressure, we are just taking it a game at a time.”
DOWDIE… I just think it will be a good game between two good teams.
