Late own goal gifts Montego Bay lead over Cavalier after JLP first-leg semis
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Montego Bay United hold a slim lead over defending champions Cavalier after the first leg semi-finals of the Jamaica Premier League at the National Stadium on Sunday.
An own goal deep into time added at the end of the second half by Adrian Reid junior gave Montego Bay a 1-0 edge going into Wednesday’s second leg at the same venue.
The western Jamaica club dominated the game but failed to get past the Cavalier defence until a mistake by the midfielder tilted the game in their favour.
Montego Bay thought they had taken the lead in the first half but Malachi Sterling’s effort was chalked off after he was ruled to be offside.
Cavalier were saved by the cross bar in the second half when Dwight Merrick’s shot came back off the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.
Montego Bay would eventually take the lead when Reid inadvertently turned a corner pass his own goalkeeper three minutes into time added.
