Men admit to stealing bikes from police station
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two men who pleaded guilty to the brazen theft of motorcycles from Irwin Police Station in St James have been remanded in custody until June 17, when their case is set to continue in the parish court.
O’neil Dennis and Jason Stephenson appeared before Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton last Wednesday, where they both pleaded guilty to larceny of a motorcycle.
The court heard that about 7:00 am on October 3, 2025, it was discovered that two motorcycles being stored at the police station had gone missing.
The matter escalated the following day when a man was seen riding one of the motorcycles. He told police he had recently purchased it. Investigators then turned their attention to Dennis, as the driver identified him as the person from whom he bought the vehicle.
On November 12, police spotted Dennis on his verandah, but he fled when he was called, evading arrest at that time. About 9:30 am on April 7, Dennis was taken into custody and brought to Irwin Police Station. While under caution, he told the police he obtained the motorcycle from Stephenson.
On April 15, about 11:20 am, Stephenson voluntarily turned up at Irwin Police Station. While being questioned under caution, he reportedly stated that both he and Dennis had stolen the motorcycles from the police station the previous year.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, the court clerk outlined further details, noting that a third motorcycle linked to Stephenson — which he said belonged to him and had been seized — was also taken from the compound, though he was not charged in relation to it.
According to the court clerk’s explanation of the sequence of events, Dennis sold one of the motorcycles to a man who is not before the court. That purchaser later informed police that he bought the bike from Dennis. When Dennis was questioned, he allegedly said he received two motorcycles from Stephenson.
However, in giving his version of events while under caution, Stephenson said he and Dennis took the motorcycles from the police compound. He said Dennis pushed them out and he assisted in removing them from the property.
“What I can say is that you are two brave young men,” Judge Fairclough-Hylton commented after hearing details of the incident.
The judge subsequently ordered a social enquiry report for both men ahead of their next court appearance.
