Speaker Holness participating in ParlAmericas Assembly in Canada
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Speaker of the House of Representatives, Juliet Holness is currently on a working visit to Canada where she is participating in the 22nd ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly and the 10th Gathering of the Open Parliament Network in Ottawa.
The meetings, being held from May 18 to 22 under the theme “Parliamentary Leadership for Shared Prosperity: Advancing Trade, Innovation, and Security in a Changing World”, have brought together parliamentary leaders and representatives from across the Americas to discuss issues affecting regional development and democratic governance.
Speaker Holness is accompanied by Clerk to the Houses, Colleen Lowe.
During the assembly, Speaker Holness is expected to participate in a series of high-level dialogues and parliamentary discussions focused on hemispheric and regional trade, open parliament initiatives, sustainable development, youth engagement, and strengthening democratic institutions.
She is also scheduled to hold a courtesy call with the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Francis Scarpaleggia, where discussions will centre on parliamentary cooperation between Jamaica and Canada.
Speaking on Jamaica’s participation in the forum, Speaker Holness said the country remains committed to strengthening democratic governance and advancing regional collaboration.
“Jamaica’s participation in the ParlAmericas Assembly reflects our continued commitment to strengthening democratic governance and advancing regional cooperation. These discussions are especially important as we work collectively to address shared challenges and build resilient and sustainable societies,” she stated.
Speaker Holness is expected to return to Jamaica on May 24, 2026.
