Maurice ‘whits’ rivals at Asphalt Assault
Maurice Whittingham emerged as the winner of Asphalt Assault: Dirt Splurt.
Put on by Team Streetz, the second round of the dexterity series was held on Sunday, May 17, in Bog Walk, St Catherine.
The Montegonian driver, nicknamed Whurl Boss, showed off why he was given the secondary moniker by his many fans, cutting down his time with each successive run of the course.
He looked in competitive combat with fellow Montegonian Cleve Ottey. At the end of the day the pair were just a hair’s breadth apart, with Whittingham claiming victory after putting down a stunning 1:00.672 run. Ottey had followed a similar path, posting impressively low times, until ultimately having to settle for second place with a 1:00.728.
The fight for the final podium spot was just as tight, with three drivers battling to the end.
Proving the point that the genre isn’t about machinery alone, Kai Chuck-Dixon, Brandon King, and Demar Lee were all in contention for third place. Chuck-Dixon and King drove naturally aspirated front-wheel drive cars, while Lee powered through the cones in his turbocharged four-wheel drive Subaru Impreza STI.
Chuck-Dixon eventually took third, posting a best time of 1:02.052.
King and Lee rounded out the top five overall finishers with 1:03.355 and 1:03.571, respectively.
Whittingham claimed the rear-wheel drive with limited-slip differential class win to go along with his overall win. Chuck-Dixon was the fastest of the front-wheel drive with limited-slip differential competitors. Lee went home with the four-wheel drive class win as well. Daren Givans was best in the front-wheel drive non-limited slip differential class in his Toyota Corolla, while Mercedes-Benz 190e driver Garth Chin was the fastest in the rear-wheel drive non-limited slip differential class. The Quad class went to Carlos Thompson.
The Asphalt Assault: Dirt Splurt will continue with its two remaining rounds at venues to be announced later in the year.
