Seville leads Jamaican invasion of Texas
WORLD Championships 100m gold medallist Oblique Seville, former World Champion men’s 400m winner Antonio Watson, as well as two-time World Indoor men’s high jump bronze medallist Raymond Richards are among nearly 24 Jamaicans who are scheduled to compete at today’s USATF Lone Star Grand Prix, at Cushing stadium in Texas — a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
With less than two weeks to go before the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) National Senior Championships set to be held June 18-21, athletes, especially those with an eye on making the team to the Commonwealth Games, are hoping for good performances.
Sprint hurdlers Ackera Nugent and Demisha Roswell as well as 800m runners Navasky Anderson, Kelly-Ann Beckford and Adelle Tracey are also set to compete.
Seville, who opened his 100m season with 9.96 seconds at last weekend’s third JAAA/Puma meet at the National Stadium will line up in the men’s 100m, along with Kadrian Goldson, and will take on a field that includes Americans Ronnie Baker and Trayvon Bromell, Canadian Andre DeGrasse, and British record holder Zharnel Hughes.
Jodean Williams and Briana Williams, who were part of the Jamaican gold medal-winning women’s 4x100m team at the World Relays along with Sabrina Dockery and Niesha Burgher will contest the women’s 100m.
They will go up against American Tamari Davis, Leah Bertrand of Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria’s Rosemary Chukwuma and Canadian record holder Audrey Leduc.
National champion Ashanti Moore is down to contest the women’s 200m against Nigerian Favour Ofili and Americans Gabrielle Thomas, Kayla White and Jenna Prandini.
Demar Francis and Adrian Kerr will run in the men’s 200m, facing the likes of American Michael Norman, Aaron Brown of Canada and Makanakaishe Charamba of Zimbabwe.
Anderson and Beckford are coming off impressive season-opening wins last week and are expected to deliver in the 800m races today.
Anderson, the World Championship finalist, faces St Vincent’s Handal Roban, Americans Sam Whitmarsh and Isaiah Jewett as well as Canada’s Abdullahi Hassan.
Beckford went under two minutes for the first time last week and will accompany Adelle Tracey when they take on Safiqua Maloney of St Vincent and the American pair of Michaela Rose and Meghan Hunter.
Romaine Beckford had a credible third place finish in the men’s high jump at Thursday’s Rome Diamond League meeting and will line up with Richards against Vernon Turner, the veteran Bhamian Donald Thomas and Caleb Snowden.
World Championships finalists Ackera Nugent, who has had a gradual build up this season and Demisha Roswell will be running the 100m hurdles and will try to match strides with Americans Grace Stark and Nia Ali and France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela.
Watson and hurdles specialist Roshawn Clarke are expected to take on the men’s 400m where Chris Bailey, Bryce Deadmon and Quincy Hall of the USA as well as Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams, are likely to provide competition.
Stacey-Ann Williams is the lone Jamaican down for the women’s 400m where she will go up against a handful of talented Americans in Rosey Effiong, Alexis Holmes, Britton Wilson and Talitha Diggs.
Malik James-King and Tyrece Hyman are set for the men’s 400m hurdles where they will hope to match strides with the Americans CJ Allen and Trevor Bassitt and Nigeria’s former NCAA champion Ezekiel Nathaniel.
Andrenette Knight and Shiann Salmon are set for the women’s 400m hurdles where they will go up against American Shamier Little, Canada’s Savannah Sutherland and Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain.
