Fi We Children mourns passing of 13-year-old Kemelia Paul
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Fi We Children Foundation (FWCF) says it is deeply saddened by reports confirming the death of 13-year-old Excelsior High School student, Kemelia Paul.
The teen reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained after being stabbed while attempting to break up a fight at her home in Harbour View, St Andrew.
Kemelia’s journey was intensely followed by Jamaicans after news broke of her condition. She was initially in a coma and recovered consciousness, but passed away on Tuesday, reports indicate.
FWCF extended its sincere condolences to Kemelia’s parents, family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the wider Excelsior High community during this difficult time.
The Foundation is urging the Ministry of Education’s Region One Guidance and Counselling Department to deploy trained grief counsellors to Excelsior to provide emotional and psychological support to students and staff who may be affected by this tragic loss.
Emphasising that no child should lose their life after attempting to break up a conflict, the organisation said the heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for stronger conflict resolution education and violence prevention interventions in Jamaica.
It noted that addressing violence among our youth and within our communities requires a coordinated effort from families, schools, civil society, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
FWCF also reminded students and young people that support is available. Anyone who is struggling with grief, emotional distress, or simply needs someone to talk to is encouraged to contact U-Matter by texting SUPPORT to 876-838-4897 to access assistance and mental health support services.
The organisation reiterated its commitment to advocating for the safety, well-being, and protection of Jamaica’s children and young people, while supporting initiatives that promote peaceful conflict resolution and safer communities.
