Relief delayed is relief denied
Dear Editor,
I hope Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness and his Government were watching news on Television Jamaica (TVJ) last Tuesday and Friday nights to see the stories of people of south-west Westmoreland and Parottee, St Elizabeth, still living under tarpaulins, without water, and scared out of their minds about this new hurricane season. They are still begging for any help they can get from the Government or anyone else.
All this while the Government has been sitting on $1.1 billion of donated funds, trying to convince us that not spending the money donated to help these people is some act of great strategy. Unless the strategy is to see how much pain the people can take, I think this has to be the worst strategy this Government has ever pursued.
For people watching the TVJ news stories, though, it was heart-rending to see the unnecessary suffering being inflicted upon the people in the name of strategy. It still boggles my mind that TVJ continues to bring these stories to light and the Government continues to do nothing.
This is nothing short of a national disgrace. These people are not being helped not because they cannot be reached and the funds are not available. They are not being helped because of incompetence being masked as some kind of strategy. It is a shame!
