Scott bounces back with Oslo win
Jamaica’s World Athletics Indoor Championships silver medallist Jordan Scott bounced back from his first defeat of the season to win the men’s triple jump at Oslo Bislett Games in Norway, the sixth stop on the Wanda Diamond League circuit, with a wind-assisted 17.66m (2.6m/s) on Wednesday.
Scott and two-time World Athletics Championships 400m hurdles bronze medallist Rushell Clayton, who finished second in the women’s 400m hurdles, were the only Jamaicans to reach the podium at the meet.
Scott, who was beaten by Italy’s Andy Diaz Hernandez at the Rome Diamond League meeting last week, equalled his personal best in Oslo and said his response to the defeat showed he was where he wanted to be at this stage of the season.
“I think it just reiterates that we are in a good spot, it’s my third meet here in Europe in as many weeks [first with my coach here] so it’s nice to be able to maintain shape, but looking forward to getting last meet out the way and going back to get some training done,” he said.
Scott added that he will compete at the Doha Diamond League meeting next Friday before returning to Jamaica for the National Championships.
Scott, who said his second-place finish in Rome was caused by “a little issue after the first attempt”, described Wednesday’s victory as “very pleasing”.
“I think going into each meet the aim is to come out with the victory… so I really wanted to come out here today and get the win,” he said.
While pleased with his performance, Scott said there was still room for improvement.
“I think there’s still a lot to figure out. I’d be lying if I said I’m anywhere near to a perfect jumper,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “There’s always something that can be fixed or that we are working on, so it’s just nice to be able to put some good marks out there in the process.”
He said he and Coach Aaron Gadson would review video footage from the competition.
“I’m sure we will look back at the videos from this meet and find a bunch of things that were off, but that’s the name of the game,” he said.
Scott had just two legal jumps after fouling his opening attempt. He recorded 16.96m (-1.8m/s) in the second round before matching his personal best and taking the lead with his third-round effort.
Hernandez was second with a season’s best-equalling 17.59m (0.0m/s), while Algeria’s Yasser Mohammed Triki was third with a wind-assisted 17.43m (2.4m/s).
Elsewhere, Clayton finished second in the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.50 seconds, her second-fastest time of the season, behind Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalova, who won in 53.13. American Jasmine Jones was third in 54.09.
Ackelia Smith opened her triple jump season with 14.50m (1.3m/s) and finished fourth. Cuba’s Davisleydi Velazco won with a wind-assisted 14.85m (2.3m/s), Senegal’s Saly Sarr was second with a personal-best 14.75m (0.9m/s), and Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez was third with a wind-assisted 14.60m (2.2m/s).
Jaydon Hibbert was fifth in the men’s triple jump with a season’s best 17.17m (0.8m/s). After fouling his opening attempt, he produced two jumps beyond 17.00m.
Nickisha Pryce was fifth in the women’s 400m in 50.39 seconds. Norway’s Henriette Jaeger won in a season’s best 49.62 seconds, ahead of Czechia’s Lurdes Gloria Manuel (50.13) and Poland’s Natalia Bukowiecka (50.34).
Danniel Thomas-Dodd placed sixth in the women’s shot put with 18.83m. American Chase Jackson broke the meet record with a season’s best 20.74m, surpassing the 20.26m mark set by New Zealand’s Valerie Adams in 2011.
The Netherlands’ Jessica Schilder was second with 20.11m and Canada’s Sarah Mitton took third with 19.89m.
