Thundercats, Dragons score upset wins in Rugby League NCC
St Catherine Thundercats and Liguanea Dragons recorded upset victories as the 2026 Rugby League Jamaica National Club Championship (NCC) continued at Cedar Grove Academy on Saturday.
After losing their opening game, the Thundercats rebounded to beat Duhaney Park Red Sharks 30-22.
Damoy Palmer scored two tries for the winners, while Shevaughn Smith, Tah-Jay Lynch, and Matthew Craig also crossed. Ahmeeiqkie Miller kicked three goals and Brandon Gordon added two.
The Red Sharks got tries from Kyjah Davis, who scored twice, along with Tavel Boodie and Adrian Thomas. Thomas also converted three goals.
“We were really pleased with our win against a full-strength Red Sharks outfit,” Thundercats Captain Lynch said. “We stuck to our systems and were rewarded with the full two points.”
Liguanea Dragons made it two wins from two games after edging JDF Warriors 12-7.
National winger Kamarine Williams and Antonio Baker scored the Dragons’ tries, while Adrian Hall kicked two goals.
Courtney Dennis scored the Warriors’ lone try. Shemar Burrell added a conversion and a drop goal.
“Winning this game shows our round-one win was no fluke; we are a genuine threat this season,” Dragons Captain Michael Pearson said.
In the other game, West Kingston Hyenas defeated Washington Boulevard Bulls 28-18.
Nicholas Topey scored two tries for the Hyenas, while Ricardo Richards, Phillip Rowe and Andrew Hylton also crossed. Hylton and Errick Groves combined for four goals.
The Bulls replied through Demario Monteith, Timarri Johnson and Tevez Tulloch, while Derone Plummer kicked three goals.
“We are happy with the win and especially pleased with our discipline,” Hyenas Coach Robert Hawes said. “There are still areas we can improve, but the team continues to build.”
