Sangster International Airport achieves Level 3 ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation
Sangster International Airport (SIA) has been officially upgraded to Level 3 of the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme – one of the most respected international benchmarks for airport carbon management.
MBJ Airports Limited (MBJ), which operates the airport, confirmed the accreditation.
At Level 3, the airport is assessed on its work to bring airlines, ground handlers, tenants, and other on-site partners into a coordinated approach to carbon reduction focused on moving environmental responsibility from a single-operator effort to a shared, measurable commitment across the entire airport community.
The announcement is timely, coming just days after World Environment Day (June 5) – the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging global awareness and action on environmental protection. MBJ views this milestone as both a celebration of the strides already made and a renewed commitment to the sustainability goals that will define the airport’s future.
Shane Munroe, Chief Executive Officer, MBJ Airports Limited, highlighted that the holistic, collaborative approach places SIA among a select group of airports globally that are driving meaningful climate action across entire operational ecosystems.
“This accreditation affirms what our team has worked tirelessly to build – a culture of environmental responsibility that extends into everything that we do. For us, sustainability is a core value that is embedded in how we plan, operate, and partner with every stakeholder at Sangster International Airport. We are proud of what has been achieved, and even more energised about what lies ahead as we continue raising the bar for airport environmental management in the Caribbean and the wider region.”
The achievement was formally acknowledged by the accrediting body, with ACI-LAC (Airports Council International – Latin America & Caribbean) extending its congratulations to the MBJ team.
“On behalf of ACI-LAC, congratulations to MBJ Airports Limited on the successful upgrade of Sangster International Airport to Level 3 of the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Reaching Level 3 is a significant achievement, demonstrating the airport’s commitment to engaging stakeholders in the collective effort to reduce carbon emissions,” said Francisco M Medela Alonso, Industry Affairs Director, ACI-LAC in his congratulatory message to the MBJ team.
Administered by Environmental Minds, the ACA Level 3 certification adds further distinction to an already robust environmental management portfolio.
SIA also holds ISO 14001 certification – the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems, which MBJ said underscores its systematic, standards-driven approach to minimising its environmental footprint across all aspects of airport operations.
Together, these certifications strengthen SIA’s position as a regional leader and model for sustainable airport management, MBJ said.
