Burn calories faster with these gym staples
WHEN it comes to losing weight, improving fitness or increasing endurance, many people ask the same question: Which piece of gym equipment burns the most calories? While no machine magically melts fat away, some equipment are far more effective at increasing calorie expenditure because they engage multiple muscle groups and elevate heart rate quickly.
“The amount of calories burned depends on several factors including body weight, workout intensity, fitness level and duration,” said fitness trainer Giovanie White. “However, certain machines consistently rank among the best for high-calorie workouts.”
These are:
Rowing machine
The rowing machine is often considered one of the most efficient pieces of cardio equipment because it combines strength and endurance training into one movement. “Unlike machines that focus mainly on the lower body, rowing activates the legs, core, back, shoulders and arms simultaneously,” White said.
”A vigorous rowing session can burn between 600 and 1,000 calories per hour depending on intensity. Because it is low-impact, it also places less stress on the joints than running, making it suitable for many fitness levels.”
He said rowing is especially effective for interval training, where short bursts of intense effort are alternated with recovery periods.
Stationary bike
Bikes are known for brutally effective workouts. The harder you pedal and push the handles, the more resistance you create.
“This full-body involvement can lead to calorie burns of 700 to 1,200 calories per hour during intense sessions,” White said. “They are commonly used in high-intensity interval training because they elevate the heart rate extremely quickly. And although workouts are often shorter, the intensity can continue increasing calorie burn even after the session ends.”
Treadmill running
The treadmill remains one of the most popular calorie-burning machines in gyms worldwide. Running engages large lower-body muscles and requires significant cardiovascular effort, especially during incline training or sprint intervals.
“Depending on speed and incline, treadmill workouts can burn between 600 and 1,100 calories per hour. Sprinting and incline walking are especially effective because they increase heart rate rapidly while challenging muscular endurance,” White said.
However, he advised that treadmills are higher impact than other machines, so people with knee or joint issues may prefer lower-impact alternatives.
Stair climber
The stair climber is one of the toughest cardio machines because it continuously works the legs and glutes against gravity. Even at moderate speeds, it can leave users breathless within minutes.
“Most people burn between 500 and 900 calories per hour on a stair climber. In addition to calorie burning, the machine is excellent for building lower-body endurance and improving cardiovascular health,” White said.
Because the movement is controlled and repetitive, he said it can also be easier on the joints than running.
Elliptical trainer
The elliptical trainer is popular among beginners and individuals recovering from injuries because it provides smooth, low-impact movement. While it may not burn calories as aggressively as sprinting or rowing, it still offers an effective cardio workout.
“An intense elliptical workout can burn between 500 and 800 calories per hour. Machines with moving handlebars increase upper-body involvement and improve overall calorie expenditure,” White said.
He said the elliptical is ideal for people who want sustained cardio exercise without excessive stress on the knees and hips.
“Note that consistency matters more than the machine itself,” White said. “A workout performed regularly at challenging intensity will always outperform occasional extreme sessions.”
He added that rather than focusing only on calories burned, it is also important to choose equipment you enjoy using. Enjoyment increases consistency, and consistency is the key to long-term fitness and fat loss success.
