Merry Ever After

From the streets of Spain to the shores of Florida, distance did not put a damper on the bond between Jamaican Chelsi Chang and American Robert Merry. What began as a fortuitous encounter blossomed into a years-long friendship that evolved into love.

How They Met

They first crossed paths during the summer of 2018 in Valencia, Spain, where they were both studying. Though they exchanged little more than a few words during a night out with mutual friends, Cupid’s arrow was already hovering.

“All my friends knew Robert and asked him for a recommendation for a bar to get a drink. My friends then encouraged him to join us at the bar later that evening. At the bar, Robert and I barely spoke. But over the coming weeks, we realised we lived across the hall from one another,” Chelsi shared with Tuesday Style Vows (TSV). “Robert would come over for hair and face masks, run errands with me, and meet me out for drinks with our friends. We were truly best friends. Come the end of the programme, an emotional Robert promised he would keep in touch. But I, ever the sceptic, thought I would never see him again.”

After exchanging numbers that summer, Tallahassee-based Robert and Miami resident Chelsi maintained a long-distance friendship for years. Though Robert’s feelings had become romantic, his occasional flirtations were initially met with a gentle brush-off from Chelsi. However, by 2020, Chelsi realised that she indeed, had feelings for him, too.

“During Thanksgiving, I was drinking wine with my family and realised how much I missed Robert and really wanted him to be with me. I wanted to be celebrating the holidays with him, and sharing family memories,” Chelsi admitted. “During this time, I was texting him to come pick me up, although I was all the way in California and he was in Florida! It was at that moment that I realised I did, in fact,
like him more than a friend.”

Determined to hear it from him first, Chelsi texted Robert to coax a confession of his feelings. He duly obliged,
but Chelsi’s phone died before she could respond — leaving it several hours until she could finally deliver the news that she felt the same way.

The Proposal

Their slow-burn romance finally surfaced in 2022. Seeing each other in person for the first time in years, Robert flew to Miami to drive Chelsi 19 hours to her graduate school in Texas. That long journey and the intimate conversations that followed reassured her that she had found her soulmate.

“I was so nervous it was going to be weird, and we’d be stuck in the car for hours with nothing to talk about. It was just the opposite. We talked about everything: Our lives, our hopes, how we saw the world, what matters to us, how we understand love,” Chelsi recalled. “There wasn’t even one awkward silence or dull moment. And somewhere along the way, we both just knew.”

This new-found certainty paved the way for a lasting commitment when Robert proposed to Chelsi on September 6, 2024. He planned the perfect surprise during a trip to Denmark on the Nyhavn waterfront. However, Chelsi suspected his grand plans, prompting Robert to bring his timeline forward.

“I had everything planned to propose to Chelsi at sunrise before the crowds arrived,” Robert told TSV. “However, the night before, Chelsi looked at me from across the table and asked, ‘Are you planning on proposing to me tomorrow?’ I sheepishly informed her ‘No. But if I were, how would that make you feel?’ And while sitting in our Airbnb apartment, lights low, Thai takeout on the table, she asked me, ‘Can you do it now?’ I grabbed the letter that I had prepared for the actual proposal, got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked her, ‘Will you marry me?’”

The Wedding

On March 21, 2026, Robert and Chelsi celebrated their union with an intimate ceremony at Craigbank Estate in Stony Hill, St Andrew. Petals and Promises brought their vision to life with décor that blended with the natural elements — exactly as they had imagined.

To the strains of SZA’s Nobody Gets Me, Chelsi — stunning in a Global Bridal Gallery ball gown — was escorted up the aisle by her mum Yvonne Harrison and dad Paul Chang to her awaiting groom. Under the guidance of wedding officiant Cian Sawyer, they exchanged vows, committing their futures to each other.

The festivities shifted into high gear at the reception, anchored by a sumptuous banquet from Annette’s Catering. The celebration took a sentimental turn as guests recreated a tradition close to the couple’s hearts. Each shared something they were grateful for that day, culminating in heartfelt toasts to the newly-weds.

In a sweet twist on tradition, rather than the standard cake-cutting, guests indulged in Devon House ice cream. The couple then shared their first dance to Michael Giacchino’s Married Life from the movie Up. It was pure party mode thereafter as DJ Powa delivered a pulsing mix of hip-hop and dancehall hits. In a spectacular conclusion to a magical night, the bridal party ended the evening by diving straight into the pool.

Robert and Chelsi honeymooned in Tokyo, Japan.
