Portland motorist fined $50,000 after pleading guilty to bribery offence
PORTLAND, Jamaica — A Portland motorist, Alty Walters, was on Tuesday fined $50,000 after pleading guilty to offering a $5,000 bribe to a police officer on May 22, 2026.
The bribe was offered whilst he was being charged for a traffic offence on West Street in Port Antonio.
Walters appeared before Portland’s Senior Judge Her Honour Jacqueline Willcott on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty. The $5,000 bill was presented in court as an exhibit.
Willcott condemned the behaviour and told the accused that what went in his favour is that “he pleaded guilty and didn’t waste the court’s time”.
He was charged under the Corruption Prevention Act under Section 14 (2) and fined the sum of $50,000 or 20 days’ hard labour, if not paid.
He paid the fine.
