SHOOT-OUT WEEKEND

Haaland-Mbappé for glory Friday; Colombia-Portugal for top Spot Saturday

IT will be a straight shoot-out between two of the world’s best strikers as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe go head to head when Norway and France collide today, Friday, then on Saturday, June 26, heavyweights Colombia and Portugal will meet in another explosive clash that will determine top spot in the group.

Event # 1 – World Cup – Norway vs France – 2:00 pm

There is a straight shoot-out for top spot as two of the world’s best strikers go head to head in Foxborough today, Friday June 25. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe already have four goals apiece in their race for the World Cup Golden Boot, with both strikers in sensational form, resulting in their nations winning their respective two opening matches so far. Norway, for all their attacking talents, have proven relatively fragile at the back, though, conceding twice against Senegal in the first game and again against minnows Iraq. With that said, Norway enters this game in excellent form, having lost just once in their last 18 overall matches, winning 14 times during this run. Surprisingly, this is Norway’s first appearance at the World Cup in 28 years.

France sits level on points with Norway ahead of their gigantic clash as they too have been in fine goalscoring form, similar to Norway, scoring six goals so far. Indeed, France being named as one of the favourites to lift this year’s title enter this clash in excellent form, having lost just one of their last 14 overall matches, including going unbeaten in the World Cup qualifiers — and that single loss was a friendly against Ivory Coast just ahead of the tournament. However, Les Blues, France, have seen both teams scoring in eight of their last 12 matches, which means fans could be in for a treat when these nations blessed with attacking talent collide.

Key Stats

• Norway has scored and conceded in their last four overall matches, including the current World Cup finals.

• France has scored in their last five overall matches but have conceded in four of their last five matches.

• Both sides – France has scored exactly three goals in four of their last five matches while Norway has scored six goals in their last two matches.

The betting tip: Both teams score and France win.

Event # World Cup – Colombia vs Portugal – 6:30 pm

Colombia sit top of the group where they hold a two-point lead over second-place Portugal ahead of this huge, heavyweight, top of the table clash tomorrow, Saturday June 25, that will determine which nation has the more favourable tie heading into the knockout rounds. Colombia has two wins from their opening two matches, beating Uzbekistan and DR Congo in a hard-fought game, with Congo’s goalkeeper making several world-class saves to keep them at bay for nearly 80 minutes. Indeed, the Colombians have lost just two of their last 15 overall matches so they will be no pushover in this huge clash.

Following their lacklustre performance in their opening World Cup game against DR Congo, where they were held to a 1-1 draw, Portugal rebounded in style when they took on World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, handing them a resounding and comprehensive 5-0 thrashing. However, a much stronger opponent awaits the Portuguese in the shape of Colombia, but having lost just once in their previous 15 overall matches — including 11 victories during this run — Portugal arrives in excellent shape and will be hard to beat. With both nations blessed with an array of attacking talents, goals look likely to be in abundance in this encounter as both teams battle it out for top spot in the group. And with five of Portugal’s last international games having over 2.5 goals being scored, this trend could well continue on Saturday.

Key Stats

• Colombia has won four of their last five overall matches, including their opening two World Cup matches.

• Portugal is unbeaten in their last five overall matches, winning four and drawing one while scoring 12 goals during this run.

• Both sides – Colombia and Portugal have never met in a competitive match before at the World Cup or major international tournaments, making this top of the table clash a genuine historic encounter.

The betting tip: Colombia wins.
