MATCH DAY PREDICTIONS

MATCH DAY PREDICTIONS

RUDDY ALLEN, JOURNALIST

The Netherlands versus Morocco clash is undoubtedly among the most anticipated of the Round of 32.

Former European champions Netherlands put up 10 goals in the group stage and have shown to be a fluent, attacking team. But while they scored freely in three group matches they gave up four at the other end, including two in a draw with Japan.

Morocco blew hot and cold during the group stage, but have proven in recent years — including their historic run at the 2022 World Cup — that they are a quality team. The manner of their opening draw against Brazil was indication of just how good the African champions can be.

I don’t see this game finishing in 90 minutes. It will be tight and extra time looks very much on the cards.

The benches of both teams will be tested, and so too the tactical acumen of the coaches to make potential match-winnings tweaks as the battle rages on. The neutrals will be in for a thriller. Prediction: Netherlands to win 2-1.

ANDRE LOWE, JOURNALIST

This is one of those must-watch games and one that signals quite clearly that we are at the business end of the tournament.

These are two really good and well-matched teams and it’s really difficult to pick a winner here.

On one hand, we have a sleeping European giant, who finally seems to be mature enough to make another serious push for the title. On the other hand, there’s an exciting and adventurous Moroccan team, filled with technical ability and championship mettle — Africa’s best and a team assured of its own power.

The Netherlands enter this contest with rhythm, balance and attacking threat but Morocco’s mix of dynamism, speed and big-match know-how, guarantee a close contest.

This feels like a tight and tense knockout game. There’s not much between them but I do fancy Morocco to dig out a close victory in this one and march into the Round of 16. Prediction: Morocco to win 2-1.

DANIEL BLAKE, JOURNALIST

Both Netherlands and Morocco are regarded by many as dark horses, so it’s a shame to see one go out this early. Netherlands are one of the best attacking teams and their fluidity will be important. With Morocco showing they can be vulnerable in wide areas, the likes of Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville should play key roles in their push. However, we shouldn’t overlook the Moroccan defensive structure which is one of the best on its day. It will be up to the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Ismael Saibari and Bilal El Khannouss to really pressure the Dutch backline which has conceded goals in seven straight games. Prediction: Netherlands to win 2-1.

Brazil 3, Japan 1
