We Jammin returns with authority in Jamaica St Leger Classic rout
WE Jammin returned from a spell on the sidelines to deliver a statement performance, romping home in the $4.5-million Jamaica St Leger Classic at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
Ridden by Reyan Lewis for trainer Peter-John Parsrad, We Jammin tracked 2000 Guineas winner Salute The Don (Raddesh Roman) through the early stages of the 10-furlong Futurity contest. Turning for home, We Jammin surged past his rival with ease and stretched clear to win the second leg of the Triple Crown by five and a quarter lengths, stopping the clock in 2:08.40 minutes.
Salute The Don had to settle for second, with London Spirit and jockey Shaheem Gordon getting third place.
The victory was especially impressive given We Jammin missed June’s 2000 Guineas due to injury. The win also denied both Salute The Don and 1000 Guineas winner Dream Catcher a possible shot at the Triple Crown. Dream Catcher (Tevin Foster) finished fifth.
It was the second winner on the day for Parsard who saddled Bangarang (Raddesh Roman) in the fifth race. Roman won aboard Rocket Fire Seb for trainer Spencer Chung in the eighth race, for a double also.
Chung saddled Goodbye Firefly (Tajay Suckoo) in the second race for two winners as well.
Also with two winners were trainer Lawrence Freemantle and jockey Tevin Foster.
Freemantle’s winners were Password, with Foster aboard, and Life is Life, ridden by Eric Haughton. Foster’s other winner was Modern Monarch for owner-trainer Carl Anderson.
Racing continues on Saturday.
