Phenomenal Power erases 43 years of history in Clovis Metcalfe thriller

THEY said the record was untouchable but Phenomenal Power said “Watch this.”

In one of the finest performances ever seen in racing at Caymanas Park, the Adrian Prince-trained, three-year-old, American-bred bay colt Phenomenal Power didn’t just win the fifth running of the $1.25-million Clovis Metcalfe Trophy on Saturday, July 4, 2026, he rewrote history while doing so.

From the moment the gates were opened it was Phenomenal Power’s race. Jockey Raddesh Roman hustled him to the front and Phenomenal Power took full command down the backstretch. No one challenged him. No one got close. He just set a steady, relentless gallop.

Around the half-mile (800m) turn Phenomenal Power shifted gears and into the stretch he turned on the jets. And while rivals started wobbling, Phenomenal Power was just getting started as he crossed the line 11¼ lengths clear, the clock stopping at 1:29.0 for 7½ furlongs (1,500m).

Forty three years, that’s how long Sky Train’s track record of 1:29.2 — set May 7, 1983 — had stood. A mark that looked carved in stone. Phenomenal Power shattered it by two-fifths of a second like it was nothing. Diesel Train finished a distant second and Royal Poppy third as they were running for place money from the moment
Phenomenal Power hit the front.

Prince was elated after the performance.

“I am feeling great, well elated, as he is a very nice horse in the making. I got this horse from Mr Philip Feanny with a lot of ability and credentials and so I just kept him on the edge, as how I got him, and this afternoon he delivered a very good win,” Prince said.

“I was a bit surprised that he ran a new track record, and I expect good things from him going forward. I just hope he keeps sound and we can have many more success,” he further said.

Prince already has big targets in mind for Phenomenal Power.

“Well, you know, the Mouttet Mile is a race that only run once a year and is a race that every trainer would love to win, and so winning the Mouttet Mile as a young trainer would be a good success. All I have to do is just keep this horse well, hope he keeps sound, and give God thanks and hope for the best,” Prince stated.

“The rider got on him every morning and they have a good understanding. The plan was to get a good break, position good, and if there are any challenges the jockey should just take it from there — and everything just went well for us. Well, coming up in class for the first time, and I saw him in front, I was a bit worried with the likes of
Girvano and the other come-from-behind runners. But from the three furlongs marker I saw that the race was over from the shouting, based on how he was travelling,” Prince ended.

Roman knew it before they even loaded.

“This horse is a very versatile runner, and I knew it was going to be a pretty easy race today. I told the trainer that I think he will break the track record and he was laughing, and look what happened. Phenomenal Power did it! As you can see, he still have more room for improvement, and I know he is going places because he is a very good horse,” Roman said.
