Lee-Chin’s Portland Holdings targets Türkiye’s nuclear energy sector
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Michael Lee-Chin’s Portland Holdings has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Turkish nuclear technology company Nuclean to explore opportunities in Türkiye’s growing nuclear energy sector.
The agreement establishes a framework through which the companies will consider cooperation in workforce training, technology, industrial supply-chain development and potential investment and financing opportunities.
It was signed at the Nuclear Power Plants and Energy Summit in Istanbul with the support of the Nuclear Industry Association of Türkiye (NIATR).
No investment value or specific project was announced. Any transaction, financing arrangement or technology transfer arising from the partnership would require separate agreements and the necessary regulatory approvals.
Portland Holdings is expected to connect the Turkish industry with participants in Canada’s nuclear energy ecosystem, including technology companies, universities, national laboratories, utilities and engineering firms.
Nuclean, meanwhile, will provide its local platform linking technology providers, investors, contractors and other participants pursuing small modular reactors (SMR) and advanced nuclear energy opportunities in Türkiye.
Lee-Chin, founder and chairman of Portland Holdings, said countries were seeking dependable low-carbon energy sources to improve energy security, industrial competitiveness and long-term economic resilience.
“Türkiye has made clear that nuclear energy will be a fundamental part of its long-term energy-security and industrial strategy,” he said.
Lee-Chin said the partnership would seek to connect Türkiye’s nuclear sector with training opportunities, international relationships and emerging nuclear technologies.
Nuclean board member Koray Tuncer said the collaboration would give Turkish industry an opportunity to engage with Canada’s nuclear sector while drawing on Portland Holdings’ commercial experience and international relationships.
“Together with Portland Holdings, Nuclean will work to turn these capabilities into practical channels of cooperation that advance SMR and advanced nuclear projects in Türkiye,” Tuncer said.
Portland Holdings, headquartered in Burlington, Ontario, is a private investment and business group with interests spanning clean energy, life sciences, financial services and other long-term growth industries.
The parties said any specific opportunities identified under the MOU would be pursued through separate written agreements.
