Brit on cocaine charges needs medication
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The lawyer for a British woman who is in lock-up on drug charges has appealed to the court for her client to be able to access prescription medication that was seized along with the rest of her belongings.
Samantha Cox-George appeared in the St James Parish Court before Judge Kaysha Grant-Pryce on Wednesday, charged with possession of, dealing in, and attempting to export cocaine. She is represented by attorney-at-law Chrishana Fregenette.
Fregenette raised concerns about her client’s medical condition, telling the court that Cox-George suffers from certain illnesses and needs to be examined by a doctor. The attorney further stated that her client had been sleeping on the floor while in custody at Cambridge Police Station.
The lawyer also told the court that Cox-George was experiencing difficulty because she does not have access to her medication as it was among items taken from her at the airport.
“We need to get her back on her medication,” Grant-Pryce said.
She then asked if Cox-George would need to be assessed and possibly medicated if her prescribed medication was not forthcoming.
The defence attorney indicated that she would like the Crown to make checks to determine whether the medication could be handed over to her client.
The charges that landed Cox-George before the court are tied to her attempt to leave Jamaica on July 9. She was in the departure line at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, preparing to board a flight to England when she was instructed to place her two suitcases on the search table.
According to the allegations, a search of the smaller suitcase revealed no illegal items. However, during a search of the larger suitcase, authorities discovered two packs of a popular brand of coffee and a pack of cassava flour.
The items were tested and allegedly found to contain a white powdery substance resembling cocaine. The substance reportedly weighed three pounds.
Cox-George was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the alleged discovery.
During Wednesday’s court proceedings, Judge Grant-Pryce questioned Cox-George’s ties to Jamaica. Her attorney responded that she has friends in St Ann.
The judge has set the matter for further mention on July 21 and Cox-George was remanded in custody until then.
