No refund for unauthorised online purchases
Dear Claudienne,
On June 24, 2024 I did a withdrawal from my Sagicor account at the ABM machine in Linstead.
I then travelled to Spanish Town to do business at the Sagicor insurance office. When I got to the office and was asked for my ID, I realised that I did not have my wallet with my documents.
I then travelled back to Linstead, tracing my path to see If I could find it. But I had no luck, all my documents were gone. I tried calling Sagicor but did not get through to them, and on the advice of someone I went to the Linstead Police Station and made a report.
As I had not got through to the bank, I then drove back to Sagicor Bank’s Spanish Town branch and made a report. At the bank I was informed that my card was used to purchase things online. I then told them to block the card.
I was given a new number and told that they would do an investigation. However since then, every time I check, I am given the runaround. And whenever I have asked to speak with the manager he is always in a meeting.
A couple weeks ago, however, I was told he said he would do some checks. Then, the Sagicor head office called and told me that I would not be refunded the money stolen from my account.
I would like to get more details on this matter and would appreciate your help.
EM
Dear EM,
Tell Claudienne contacted Sagicor, and after the company’s public relations manager spoke to you on July 8 you sent the column the following WhatsApp message:
“I was told that they were unable to get back the funds from the overseas vendor so they are unable to reimburse me. Thanks for assisting me in getting a clear response.”
Tell Claudienne has received the following email from the vice-president of banking operations at Sagicor Bank:
“Thank you for reaching out.
Following on our discussion, kindly note Sagicor Bank takes every client concern seriously, and regrets the circumstances experienced by EM.
Please note that a thorough internal investigation was conducted, and the findings were shared with EM. Our team also remained engaged with EM throughout the process, from the time the matter was first reported in June 2024.
While we are unable to discuss individual client matters publicly, we can confirm that the card in question was blocked immediately after it was reported missing. In addition, efforts were made to assist the client in the recovery of the funds involved.”
We wish you all the best.
