Guardsman mourns passing of employee following garage explosion

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Guardsman Group says it is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its employees who was injured in an explosion in May while mechanical work was being carried out at its garage compound.

The employee was among three individuals who sustained critical burn injuries in the incident and, through a coordinated effort involving local and international partners, was airlifted to the United States the day after the incident to receive specialised treatment at a burn care facility.

In a statement on Monday, following his death, the group shared that since his admission, he had received continuous medical attention from a highly experienced team specialising in the treatment of severe burns.

“Despite the tireless efforts of the medical professionals and the unwavering support of his loved ones, his injuries proved too severe,” Guardsman said.

“Guardsman extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The company continues to provide support to the family and remains committed to assisting them as best as possible,” it said.

Executive Chairman of Guardsman Group Kenneth Benjamin reflected on the profound impact of the loss, describing it as a heartbreaking day for the entire Guardsman family.

“From the very moment the incident occurred, our focus was on doing everything within our power to give our injured colleagues every possible chance of recovery. Standing at the airside as they departed for specialised treatment remains one of the most emotional moments I have experienced. Today, our hearts are with the family of our fallen colleague, and we pray that they find strength and comfort in the days ahead. We will continue to stand beside them,” he said.

Deputy Executive Chairman, Nicholas Benjamin, added that: “Watching our colleague leave Jamaica surrounded by hope, courage, and the prayers of so many was a moment none of us will ever forget. While we held onto hope throughout his treatment, we are deeply saddened by this outcome. On behalf of the entire Guardsman team, we extend our sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones. We also continue to keep the other injured employees in our thoughts as they progress through their recovery.”

The company said it remains grateful to the emergency responders, Burn Foundation of Jamaica, healthcare professionals, aviation partners, and everyone who contributed to the swift coordination of the overseas medical transfer and the ongoing care provided to the injured employees.
