KINGSTON, Jamaica —Male condoms continued to be the contraceptive of choice for Jamaicans in 2025, accounting for 83.2 per cent of overall distributions, followed by injections at 14.1 per cent and pills at 2.4 per cent.

This is according to the 2025 edition of the Economic and Social Survey Jamaica, a publication of the Planning Institute of Jamaica.

The survey found that a total of 92, 538 family planning visits were recorded last year, with females accounting for the majority at 97.9 per cent.

The majority of recorded visits were in St Catherine, which accounted for 17.5 per cent, followed by Clarendon with 12.6 per cent and Kingston with 12.0 per cent. The parishes with the lowest number of visits were St James, which accounted for 3.3 per cent and Hanover at 2.8 per cent.

There were a total of 12,663 new acceptors of family planning commodities in 2025, of which 49.4 per cent received injections, 25.6 per cent utilised dual methods (that is, condom with pill, injection, intrauterine contraceptive device or implant contraceptives), and  13.6 per cent utilised condoms.

The diaphragm (one acceptor) and the emergency contraceptive pill (nine acceptors) had the lowest uptake for the period. Of the new acceptors, 1, 610 individuals were tested for HIV, of which 95.9 per cent were females. There were 26 female sterilisation procedures done at hospitals, while no males were sterilised.

The survey cited that there was a decline in the number of commodities distributed at family planning clinics across the island, moving from 980,758 in 2024 to 605,270 in 2025.
