KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed condolences to the Government and people of Guyana following the capsizing of the MV Barima off the country’s coast on Saturday night, which claimed at least 27 lives.

In a press release on Tuesday, Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign, Regional and Diaspora Affairs, Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, said the tragedy had deeply saddened the region.

“The heartbreaking events unfolding in Guyana have deeply saddened us all. On behalf of the People’s National Party, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have suffered unimaginable loss and to those who continue to await news of their loved ones. We keep the people of Guyana in our thoughts during this difficult period and commend the courage and dedication of the rescue personnel who continue their tireless efforts,” Scott-Mottley said.

The PNP also reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Guyana, expressing confidence that the enduring spirit of Caribbean unity would help the nation as it recovers from the tragedy.

Guyana’s Prime Minister, Mark Phillips, said 69 people had been rescued after the ferry overturned, while 83 others remained missing. The aging vessel was travelling from the capital, Georgetown, to the inland Essequibo region when it capsized.

Phillips said authorities were now “confident” that 179 people had been aboard the ferry after earlier uncertainty over the number of passengers.
