Last August, Richie Flo paid tribute to his home parish with the release of St Thomas Mi Born,
his second album.

Two months later, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica and the Canada-based singer was anxious about his family’s safety.

In June, Richie Flo visited relatives in the district of Buckeny, Yallahs, for the first time since the Category 5 hurricane hit the island devastating some north-western areas.

“Coming back to St Thomas after everything that happened with Hurricane Melissa was emotional. St Thomas wasn’t hit as hard as some of the other parishes, but you can still see the effects in different ways,” he said. “What stood out to me the most, though, was the strength, resilience, and positive spirit of the people. The love and support I’ve received has been incredible, so much high energy, encouragement, and genuine love.”

St Thomas, one of the songs from St Thomas Mi Born, is a nod to Richie Flo’s roots. It also gives a shout-out to some of the parish’s most famous people, including National Hero Paul Bogle, entertainers Bushman and Popcaan, and Miss World 2019 Toni-Ann Singh.

He said his week-long visit “reminded me where I come from and why I make music”.

Richie Flo started his recording career in 2006 as a deejay. He switched to singing after migrating to Canada in 2015, and has performed extensively on the Toronto reggae scene.

His first album, Life, Love & Music, was released in 2019.
