KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) made $1.5 billion in fare income in 2025 when compared to $1.3 billion in 2024.

The higher earnings is a result of the additional buses acquired by the State-owned bus company, says the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) in the 2025 edition of its annual publication, the Economic and Social Survey Jamaica.

Revenue from charter trips jumped to $135.0 million in 2025, compared with $100.9 million in 2024.

PIOJ said the average number of buses that operated monthly in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region last year was 201 compared with 168 in 2024. In line with higher number of buses dispatched, there was an increase in revenue passenger trips to 19.0 million compared with 17.3 million which resulted in the additional $200 million in revenue.

Meanwhile, a total of 109,692 New Smarter Cards were issued, relative to 19,135 for 2024. Revenue intake increased by $129.3 million to $571.0 million, linked to the higher issuance of cards. This total accounted for approximately 38.0 per cent of fare income, compared with 35.0 per cent in 2024, said the PIOJ.
