Mr Oliver Mair does not strike you as the traditional diplomat. He moves through any crowd as if he belongs, friend to all, enemy to none, and has made himself a true representative of Jamaicans domiciled abroad.

Mr Mair has been in the diplomatic service for a mere seven years, as consul general in Miami covering 13 American states. Those who have been keeping up could easily think he was there for way more years, such has been his impact.

It would therefore come as no surprise that the Foreign Minister Senator Mrs Kamina Johnson Smith appointed him to be Jamaica’s next consul general in New York — a big promotion, even if the loftiest job remains in Washington, DC.

He will, appropriately, succeed the much-loved Consul General Alsion Roach, who passed away in November 2025.

With consummate ease, while at his Miami posting, he led initiatives in Diaspora engagement, trade and investment promotion, health and education partnerships, and consular service delivery, the Foreign Ministry confirms.

He has also served as dean of the South Florida Caribbean Consular Corps since 2022, and as deputy dean of the South Florida Consular Corps since 2025 — two key engagements that lifted his profile as a true envoy for Jamaica.

Mr Mair’s success in mobilising partnerships and support for Jamaica has prepared him for the new post, which serves Jamaica’s largest overseas population across 33 US states, Mrs Johnson Smith pointed out in her announcement.

“New York is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Jamaican communities in the world. As consul general in Miami, Oliver Mair’s… record of service in South Florida reflects a commitment to our nationals, meaningful engagement with the Diaspora, and practical partnerships that have delivered real benefits for both Jamaicans at home and abroad,” Minister Johnson Smith said.

Always reflecting the true spirit of Jamaican culture, especially its music, he is expected to bring the same energy, innovation, and dedication to the job in New York, serving as head of mission, with concurrent accreditation to Bermuda and Puerto Rico.

The Campion College old boy holds a Master in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Arts in Management Studies and English Literature from The University of the West Indies. He completed the Harvard Business School General Management Programme and was awarded a Doctor of Ministry (honoris causa) from the University of Fort Lauderdale.

Among his notable achievements, the ministry noted, is the establishment of the annual Jamaica Hi-5 Reggae Run/Walk, which has become one of the South Florida Diaspora’s flagship community events, which raises support for Jamaica’s health-care sector.

That well-supported initiative has played a significant role in mobilising support for the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Adopt-a-Clinic programme, with the southern region becoming the programme’s largest contributor, notably supporting the adoption of 17 rural health facilities, including six funded directly through proceeds from the Hi-5 event.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Mr Mair worked tirelessly with Diaspora organisations, humanitarian partners, and community volunteers to support Jamaica’s relief effort.

Jamaica will be the better off for this sensible appointment.
