SANIQUE Walker extended Jamaica’s dominance in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games to four-straight titles after running a personal best 54.00 seconds to win gold at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on Friday.

The gold was Jamaica’s fifth of the Games and continued a streak that started with Kaliese Spencer’s victory in Glasgow in 2014. Janieve Russell followed with titles in Australia in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022, taking Jamaica’s medal haul in the event to 10.

Jamaica added four more medals on Friday to move into second place in the medal standings with 12 medals — five gold, two silver and five bronze.

Walker lowered the personal best of 54.56 seconds she set while winning the Jamaica National Championships in June and moved to 11th on Jamaica’s all-time list.

England’s Emily Newnham won silver in 54.04 seconds, while Canada’s Savannah Sutherland took bronze with a season’s best 54.16 seconds. Jamaica’s Shiann Salmon, the silver medallist in Birmingham four years ago, finished fifth in 55.54 seconds.

Assinie Wilson earned bronze in the men’s 400m hurdles, clocking 49.22 seconds from lane eight. Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel won gold in 48.47 seconds, with England’s Jake Minshull taking silver in 48.99 seconds.

Christopher Taylor also won bronze after producing a personal best 20.11 seconds (1.7m/s) in the men’s 200m, improving on the 20.21 seconds he ran at last year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile claimed the country’s first Commonwealth Games men’s 200m title in 19.96 seconds. Nigeria’s Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike finished second with a season’s best 20.09 seconds, while Jevaughn Powell placed fifth in 20.36 seconds.

Alana Reid secured Jamaica’s third bronze medal of the day in the women’s 200m, running 22.56 seconds (1.7m/s) for her first individual medal at a senior global championship. Reid won bronze in the event at the 2022 World Athletics Under-20 Championships.

British Virgin Islands’ Adaejah Hodge won gold in 22.07 seconds for the territory’s first Commonwealth Games women’s 200m title, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe took silver in a surprise 22.35 seconds.

Ashanti Moore finished fourth in 22.57 seconds and Lavanya Williams was fifth in 22.62 seconds.

Kelly-Ann Beckford placed seventh in the women’s 800m final in 2:02.77.

Meanwhile, Ackelia Smith moved a step closer to a second medal after qualifying for today’s women’s long jump final. Fresh from winning silver in the triple jump on Thursday, Smith cleared 6.58m (1.3m/s) in Group B, the sixth-best mark of the qualifying round.

Nia Robinson, a finalist at the World Indoor Championships in March, recorded three fouls in Group A and failed to advance.

Jamaica also qualified for the mixed 4x400m relay final after finishing third in their semi-final in 3:17.36. The team comprised Delano Kennedy, Shana Kay Anderson, Christopher Taylor and Leah Anderson.

In cycling, Dahlia Palmer finished 19th of 22 riders in the women’s sprint qualifying in 12.422 seconds.
