Theodore Whitmore, head coach of Mount Pleasant FA, says their objectives were achieved after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Delfines del Este Fútbol Club of the Dominican Republic in the final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield.

Shaqueil Bradford’s second-half goal at Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago gave them the title.

Victory saw the former Jamaica Premier League champions join Arnett Gardens as the Jamaican teams to have won the competition.

Mount Pleasant and Delfines had already qualified for the Concacaf Caribbean Cup after respective victories over SV Robinhood of Suriname and Metropolitan of Puerto Rico on Friday.

Mount Pleasant will join fellow Jamaican clubs Portmore United and Cavalier in Group B in the Caribbean Cup which starts on Wednesday. Cibao FC (Dominican Republic) and Salcedo (Dominican Republic) are also in Group B.

Mount Pleasant FA are the defending champions of the Caribbean Cup.

“We put a lot of hard work over the past couple of weeks and I think we would have met our objective this afternoon,” Whitmore said. “This tournament gave us a chance to really play against quality opponents. We have the Caribbean Club championship right around the corner, so you know we would have gotten quality practice games going into this tournament.”

Whitmore, who became the first coach to win the trio of the CFU Caribbean Cup (Jamaican national team in 2010), the Concacaf Caribbean Cup (Mount Pleasant in 2025) and CFU Club Shield (Mount Pleasant in 2026), said there is room for improvement.

“I think it’s a good tournament and we would have used these games as warm-up games, and with each game I think we would have seen improvements. There are areas that need to be working on, but now we have a few days to prepare for the the Concacaf Club Championship,” he explained.

Daniel Green, who captained the team, was happy with the title triumph.

“Well, it’s a tremendous feeling for everyone because we came into this league to win and to qualify for the next round, so it’s a great feeling and a winning momentum going forward.”

“We’re going to take it step by step and game by game, [and] just work together as a team. We go back to the training ground and prepare again.”

After wasting a number of good scoring chances in the first half, Mount Pleasant got the crucial goal in the 51st minute when Bradford was the quickest to react to a block from Delfines goalkeeper Pedro Espinal Almonte.
