KINGSTON, Jamaica — The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) has expressed condolences following the death of veteran Jamaican photojournalist Headley “Dellmar” Samuels, describing him as a legendary storyteller through the lens of his camera.

In a release on Thursday, WIPA said Samuels had a lifelong passion for sports photography, covering track and field, football and, most notably, cricket. The association noted that he covered West Indies cricket for more than three decades, documenting approximately 175 Test matches and seven ICC Cricket World Cups.

Samuels was awarded the Order of Distinction in 2000 in recognition of his contribution to Caribbean cricket and was a life member of the Press Association of Jamaica.

WIPA President and Chief Executive Officer, Wavell Hinds, described Samuels as “a giant photographer and journalist” whose work left a lasting impact.

“We’ve lost a giant photographer and journalist. His storytelling through his camera lens was legendary. Dellmar Samuels was a very special character who loved West Indies cricket immensely. It was a joy to interact with him on our many tours. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and the cricketing fraternity. May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him,” Hinds said.
