KINGSTON, Jamaica—A man was shot dead and an illegal firearm seized during an alleged police shootout in Olympic Gardens, St Andrew, on Thursday morning.

He has been identified as 33-year-old Swayne ‘Black Gad’ Robinson from Bottom Halse Hall in May Pen, Clarendon.

The seized firearm is a Black 9mm pistol with a magazine containing three rounds.

Reports reaching Observer Online indicated that around 4:45 am, a police team, armed with a search warrant, went to the area to search for Robinson, who was a person of interest.

Upon arrival at the location, the team breached the premises using a ballistic shield and accosted four people. Robinson fled and ran inside a house.

The team gave chase. Upon entering the home, Robinson, the police said, pointed a firearm in their direction and opened fire at them, hitting the ballistic shield.

The team took evasive action and returned the fire. Robinson was hit and fell to the ground clutching the firearm.

The weapon was reportedly retrieved, and the now-deceased was transported to the Kingston Public Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police said preliminary intelligence indicates that Robinson was a member of a gang that was planning a gun attack on a yet-to-be-identified male in the St Andrew South Division.

Additional intelligence indicates that the planned attack stems from the absence of a prohibited weapon. Robinson was released from prison in 2023.
