Williams leads Jamaica to third at Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships
KIERRA Williams and Purbo Camden were Jamaica’s top performers at the 69th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) held at Royal Blue Golf Course in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The duo improved their scores and positions after difficult opening rounds during the three-round championship.
Williams finished tied for second after placing sixth in the opening round and moving into a share of first place after the second. She carded six over par 78, one over par 73, and two over par 74 for a nine-over 225 total — her best performance at the CAGC.
Her teammates Mattea Issa and Kingston Burke finished 11th and 13th, respectively, with totals of 248 and 250. Both saved their best scores for the final round, with Issa shooting four-over 76 and Burke six-over 78.
The Jamaican women finished third behind defending champions Puerto Rico and hosts The Bahamas. Puerto Rico retained the George Teale Trophy while Jamaica improved on its fourth-place finish last year.
Camden finished 28th with a three-round total of 233 after scores of 78, 79 and 76. His final position was two places better than his joint 30th position after the opening round.
Former national champion Oshae Haye ended joint 34th with Trey Williams after both finished on 234. Haye’s best score was a one-over 77 in the second round while Williams shot 75.
Reigning national champion and trials winner Zandre Roye recovered from a disastrous opening round to shoot 76 and 73 in his final two rounds. He finished tied for 37th with a total of 236. His one-over 73 was the best individual score by a member of Jamaica’s male team.
Multiple-time representative Owen Samuda finished 44th after scores of 85, 84 and 81 for a total of 250.
Jamaica’s other men’s representative, Mark Newnham, finished 47th on 254 after scores of 87, 84 and 83. He improved five places from his position after the opening round.
The Jamaican men finished eighth in the 10-team competition. Defending champions Puerto Rico retained the Hoerman Cup, with Trinidad and Tobago second and Bermuda third.
Puerto Rico also retained the Arthur Ziadie Trophy with 58 points. Bermuda was second with 47 points, Dominican Republic third with 41, while Jamaica finished sixth with 33 points.
