KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed condolences to the Government and people of Colombia following a devastating earthquake that struck the country on Monday, resulting in loss of life, injuries and significant damage to communities.

In a statement, Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign, Regional and Diaspora Affairs, Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, expressed solidarity with the people of Colombia and families affected by the disaster.

“At this difficult moment, our thoughts are with the people of Colombia, particularly those who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, and the families anxiously awaiting word on the safety of their relatives and friends,” Scott-Mottley said.

“We know all too well in this region how quickly a natural disaster can change lives and leave communities facing uncertainty and loss.”

Scott-Mottley also commended emergency responders, healthcare workers, volunteers and citizens who have joined rescue and relief efforts.

“The courage of those who are working through the rubble, caring for the injured and supporting their neighbours is a reminder of the strength that emerges when people come together in the face of adversity,” she said.

“We commend all those who are putting themselves at risk to save and protect others.”

The PNP also recognised the long-standing friendship between Jamaica and Colombia and the bonds connecting their Caribbean and Latin American neighbours.

“At times of tragedy, these bonds take on an even greater meaning as we extend compassion and solidarity to those facing loss and uncertainty,” the statement said.

The party said it stands with Colombia during the difficult period and extended its sympathies to grieving families, those injured and communities working to recover from the tragedy.
