STEER TOWN, St Ann — The Sandals-sponsored Steer Town Community Football League got off to an exciting start recently, with a pair of entertaining matches at the Steer Town playfield.

In the opening encounter, Mikeal Moodie produced a standout performance, scoring a hat-trick to lead Red Dirt to a convincing 3-0 victory over Godsto.

The feature match was equally competitive, with Gully Bank defeating Gulf 4-2 in a six-goal thriller.

The competition, organised by the Steer Town Community Organisation with Total Tools as associate sponsor, features eight teams divided into two zones of four each. The top two teams from each zone will advance to the play-off round.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sandals regional public relations manager for St Ann Ian Spencer urged participating teams to demonstrate discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition. He that sport provides young people with an important avenue to develop and showcase their talents.

“Sandals is proud to stand alongside the Steer Town Community Organisation in bringing this competition to life. This partnership is not new but a genuine desire to continue the upliftment of the community of Steer Town,” Spencer said.

He added that football extends beyond competition, describing the sport as a powerful tool for building character and strengthening communities.

“Football has always been more than just a sport. It is a unifying force. It creates discipline, builds character, and gives young men a positive outlet to showcase their talent, energy, and passion. This league will provide exactly that — a structured, meaningful space where skills can be sharpened, teamwork can flourish, and dreams can begin to take shape,” Spencer said.

He highlighted Sandals’ wider commitment to the development of the Steer Town community, pointing to initiatives including anti-violence campaigns in schools, the upgrading of school facilities, the donation of hurricane relief supplies and outreach activities involving the elderly.

“As a company, we take our role as good corporate neighbours very seriously. Our investment in this league is a reflection of our belief that strong communities create a stronger Jamaica. When our young people are engaged, inspired, and supported, everyone benefits,” Spencer said.

Steer Town Community Organisation President Junior Wallace expressed gratitude to Sandals for its sponsorship and said he was looking forward to maintaining a strong and harmonious relationship with the resort.

He said the community had long been seeking corporate support for the football competition and welcomed Sandals’ decision to come on board.

“We have always been seeking a corporate sponsor and we are over the moon that Sandals is on-board. They have been working with us on a number of events in the community and this sponsorship is really appreciated,” he said.

Wallace urged the players to maintain discipline both on and off the football pitch, while noting the important role the league has played in bringing residents together.

The second round of matches produced more exciting action, with Record Football Club edging Dam Head 4-3, while Chalky Hill recorded a 4-1 victory over Hollywood.

The competition is to continue on Sunday, August 23, at the Steer Town field. Godsto are set to face Hollywood at 5:00 pm, while Gully Bank are to tackle Record FC in the feature encounter at 6:30 pm.
